Making your own art supplies can be just as fun as using them. One idea is homemade earth paint. Inspired by our ancient ancestors, earth paint is made from herbs and comes in all of your favorite colors.
Add to the fun by assigning an essential oil to each color. Use Cinnamon essential oil for your red paint, Lime essential oil for your green, or Lavender for your purple. The options are endless and so is the fun!
What You Need:
2 tablespoon ground herb
2 tablespoons vegetable glycerin
1 teaspoon bentonite clay
3 drops essential oil
Note: You could also use an egg white or water instead of vegetable glycerin. However, if you use water or an egg white, the shelf life is only a day. The shelf life with vegetable glycerin is 6 months.
Herb Colors and Essential Oils:
Beet Root Powder: Red (Cinnamon)
Turmeric Powder: Orange (Wild Orange)
Ground Mustard Seed: Light Yellow (Lemon)
Skullcap Herb: Light Green (Lime)
Spirulina: Dark Green (Peppermint)
Bilberry Fruit: Purple (Lavender)
Black Walnut: Gray (Balance)
Activated Charcoal Powder: Black (Fennel)
Arrowroot: White (Purify)
1. Combine powdered herb, clay, and vegetable glycerin in a small bowl.
2. Mix well.
3. Add essential oil and stir.
4. Store in airtight container.
Tip: We used empty baby food containers.
5. Use as desired.
If you used the vegetable glycerine base, there are a few different types of methods for using earth paint. The first is to use the paint without any water and the other is to use it with water.
Without Added Water
Dip paintbrush into paint, with no added water, for the most vibrant color. However, it will take a very long time to dry without any water added. If you decide to use this method, make sure to let it dry in an area where it will not be disturbed.
With Added Water:
Dip paintbrush in water to create a more watercolor-like consistency. This will be the best method for a quick dry time. However, the colors will not be as vibrant.
